Two FSU Shooting Victims, Both Fathers, Have Been Identified — Here’s What We Know

Two fathers were shot and killed on April 17, 2025, when a gunman opened fire on the campus of Florida State University. Six other people were injured during the attack.

The victims were later identified as Robert Morales of Miami-Dade County and Tiru Chabba of Greenville, South Carolina. Both were on campus that day for work-related reasons.

Morales was a South Florida native and a well-known figure in Tallahassee’s food community. He helped found Gordos Cuban Cuisine, a popular restaurant near the FSU campus. On the day of the shooting, Morales was visiting the university.

He had planned to meet up at the student union with his longtime friend Carlos Cruz and Cruz’s son — a routine they followed every Thursday. However, Cruz said his son stayed in his dorm that day instead of joining them.

Cruz, who has known Morales and his family for over 30 years, said Morales was passionate about Cuban cuisine and had grown the restaurant into a thriving enterprise. “That passion for cuisine and Cuban food was just taken to the next level, because now here he is helping to run a multi, multi, multi million dollar operation and deciding who and what gets into the university,” Cruz said.

Morales is survived by his wife and daughter. On April 18, his older brother, Ricardo Morales Jr., confirmed this in a post shared on X. “He loved his job at FSU and his beautiful Wife and Daughter. I’m glad you were in my Life,” he wrote. The post included throwback photos of Morales from his childhood.

The second victim, 45-year-old Tiru Chabba, was from Greenville, South Carolina. He had been working on campus as an employee of a university vendor when the shooting began. According to attorneys hired by his family, Chabba leaves behind a wife and two children.

No further details have been released about the shooter or the conditions of the six wounded individuals. Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
