Sarah Snook‘s Broadway debut is a certified Tony-winning hit!
Snook’s turn in The Picture of Dorian Gray won her first-ever Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play on Sunday, June 8 at the 78th annual ceremony celebrating the best of Broadway.
The Emmy-winning actress, 37, took the stage at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City to accept the trophy from presenters Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter for her role in the stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel. Snook plays Lord Henry and Dorian Gray, plus two dozen other characters, in the new adaptation directed and written by Kipp Williams.
Snook began her speech by noting the Tony Awards audience is an “intimidating room of incredibly talented people.”
“This means so much for a little Australian girl to be here on Broadway,” Snook continued. “[The Picture of Dorian Gray] is billed as a one-person show, and I don’t feel alone any night that I do this show. There are so many people on stage making it work and behind the stage making it work.”

Snook thanked her director Williams, who she deemed “incredible,” before moving onto giving gratitude towards husband and comedian Dave Lawson.
“An exceptional thank you to my husband, my soulmate. You are so brilliant holding the fort down and keeping our family together,” Snook said, adding she’s also thankful for Lawson looking after their daughter while she worked on the production. Snook and Lawson welcomed their first child together in 2023.

The Succession star was nominated in the category along with Laura Donnelly (The Hills of California), Mia Farrow (The Roommate), LaTanya Richardson Jackson (Purpose) and Sadie Sink (John Proctor Is the Villain).

The Picture of Dorian Gray features scenic design by Marg Horwell, costume design by Marg Horwell, lighting design by Nick Schlieper, sound design by Clemence Williams and video design by David Bergman. Mary Hamrick (associate scenic design), Karen Spahn (associate lighting design), Daniel Vatsky (associate video design), Alex Brock (assistant sound design), Jaechelle Johnson (assistant sound design) and Alyssa Eilbott (moving light programmer) round out the creative team.
Developed by the Sydney Theatre Company, the play premiered in Australia back in 2020, extending twice in Sydney before touring the content. Snook previously starred in the show at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London, winning an Olivier Award for her work in it.
