Donald Trump Makes Canada New Offer to Become USA’s 51st State
A recent statement by the U.S. president has drawn a firm response from Canada.
U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Canada could join the United States as its 51st state, offering the idea as part of his pitch to include the country in America’s new missile defense system.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!” Trump posted on Truth Social, on May 28, 2025.
The Golden Dome for America, established by Executive Order 14186 in January, is a next-generation missile defense system designed to protect the United States from a range of aerial threats.
The Department of Defense called it “a historic investment in American security” and said it would “progressively protect our nation from aerial attacks from any foe,” including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles armed with either conventional or nuclear warheads.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to Trump’s proposal by reinforcing Canada’s position on national sovereignty.
They stated that the Prime Minister had personally communicated this message to Trump, underscoring that “Canada is an independent sovereign nation, and it will remain one.”
While ruling out any change in political status, the spokesperson highlighted, “Canadians gave the Prime Minister a strong mandate to negotiate a comprehensive new security and economic relationship with the United States.”
These talks, according to the spokesperson, have been “wide ranging and constructive,” focusing on joint defense planning through NORAD and new collaborative efforts such as the Golden Dome.
