Investigation Into 18-Year-Old Megan Trussell’s Passing Ends — Cause of Death Is Revealed
The investigation into the death of a student in Colorado has officially concluded, with authorities releasing final findings following months of careful review.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation into the death of Megan Trussell, an 18-year-old University of Colorado Boulder student.
Authorities announced Wednesday, May 28, 2025, that Trussell died from “the toxic effects of amphetamine,” with hypothermia as a contributing factor. Her death was ruled a suicide.
Trussell was last seen on February 9, 2025, leaving her dorm at 9:36 p.m. and captured walking alone on campus at 9:52 p.m. Cell phone data indicated she traveled west toward Boulder Canyon Drive, where her phone’s last signal was recorded. Her body was found on February 15 near the 40-mile marker.
On March 5, a passerby found Trussell’s purse near the 39.6-mile marker of Highway 36. Her phone was later traced to a resale kiosk, sold by 50-year-old Elliot Michael Beafore, who was charged with misdemeanor theft and later released. Authorities found no evidence of foul play.
“This outcome is heartbreaking, and our hope is that the findings may bring some closure to Megan’s loved ones and to the broader community,” said Sheriff Curtis Johnson, urging community members to seek help if struggling.
