Patti LuPone is getting very candid about former costars and past relationships.
In a New Yorker profile published Monday, May 26 to promote her upcoming guest spot in …And Just Like That, Broadway legend LuPone, 76, was direct about her feelings for Audra McDonald, Glenn Close, and even her ex Kevin Kline.
Known for not mincing words when it comes to discussing feuds and faded friendships, LuPone opened up where she stands with several celebrities, and who she prefers not to work with ever again. Below is a breakdown of each star LuPone fired at in her latest interview.

Audra McDonald
Reflecting on her relationship with McDonald, 54, LuPone admitted the two Broadway icons have had issues in the past. The Agatha All Along actress did not elaborate on the history of their falling out, simply noting the Gypsy star is “not a friend.”
When asked what she thought of McDonald’s current turn as Rose in Gypsy, LuPone — who won a Tony for playing the same role in the 2008 production — reportedly stared in silence for 15 seconds before turning to the window and sighing, “What a beautiful day.”
McDonald, 54, received her record-making 11th Tony nomination for Gypsy, becoming the most Tony-nominated performer of all time. The actress already holds the record for wins, with six Tonys. (LuPone has three.)
She and LuPone have worked together in the past, performing in concerts, galas and in the 2007 LA Opera production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. They also costarred in the 2000 New York Philharmonic’s concert version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with LuPone as Mrs. Lovett and McDonald as the Beggar Woman.

Kecia Lewis
LuPone also discussed the conflict she had late last year with a fellow Broadway star, Kecia Lewis.
The Hell’s Kitchen performer had posted a video to Instagram criticizing LuPone for calling the Alicia Keys musical “too loud” — remarks that Lewis, 59, dubbed “bullying,” “offensive,” “racially microaggressive,” “rude” and “rooted in privilege.” At the time, LuPone was starring opposite Mia Farrow in the play The Roommate and had been complaining about hearing Hell’s Kitchen‘s sound cues through the wall the two buildings shared.
“She calls herself a veteran? Let’s find out how many Broadway shows Kecia Lewis has done, because she doesn’t know what the f— she’s talking about,” LuPone said. “She’s done seven. I’ve done 31. Don’t call yourself a vet, bitch!”
Schulman noted Lewis — who was in the original Broadway company of Dreamgirls — actually had 10 Broadway credits, and LuPone, 28.

Glenn Close
LuPone also addressed a lengthy feud with the Tehran star — which dates back to 1994 when Andrew Lloyd Webber chose Close, 78, to play the lead in Sunset Boulevard’s Broadway debut instead of LuPone, who had been starring in the West End production.
“I’d felt rejection, but not that kind of rejection,” LuPone said, also telling the outlet she felt the decision was designed to create a rivalry between the two actresses.
However, a grudge seemingly remained. LuPone recounted the two sitting next to each other during a Kennedy Center tribute to Barbara Cook in 2011. According to LuPone, Close said “I had nothing to do with it” regarding Webber’s casting of her for the Broadway production.
“I wanted to go, ‘Bullshit, bitch!’ ” LuPone quipped.

Kevin Kline
LuPone discussed her “painful” seven-year relationship with Kline, 77, who she first met at The Juilliard School in New York.
“I took an instant dislike to him,” the actress told The New Yorker. “He looked like Pinocchio to me. He had skinny legs and he was tall, and I didn’t really see the handsomeness.”
However, LuPone said things shifted one day when the two sat in the back of an art-appreciation class together and started “feeling each other up.” What followed was an on-off relationship that lasted seven years, the outlet noted.
LuPone told The New Yorker, “It was a painful relationship. I was his girlfriend when he wanted me to be his girlfriend… And I, for some reason, stuck it out — until I couldn’t stick it out anymore.”
Kline ended up marrying Phoebe Cates in 1989, while LuPone married Matthew Johnston in 1988. During their romance, LuPone and Kline worked together on the 1975 Broadway musical The Robber Bridegroom.
Ron Duguay and Sarah Palin
Addressing dating rumors with New York Rangers player Ron Duguay, the Beau Is Afraid actress said the two were more like acquaintances.
Nonetheless, LuPone offered a sharp observation of his current relationship with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
“They’re perfect for each other. They’re two of the stupidest human beings on the face of the earth,” LuPone said, reportedly pausing then asking, “How do you say stupid without saying stupid? He’s a box of bricks.”
