Amanda Peet had no hesitations about jumping into sex scenes in Your Friends & Neighbors.

In the Apple TV+ dark comedy, the actress, 53, plays Mel Cooper, a therapist who split from her husband Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm) after having an affair with his NBA-playing best friend Nick Brandes (Mark Tallman).

The show puts Peet in steamy scenes with both Hamm and Tallman, and after 30-plus years in the industry, she tells PEOPLE there’s not much that can faze her.

“Dude, I’ve been doing this for so long, I’m just like, ‘Show me where to be. Show me who to kiss. Who do I have to make out with today?'” Peet said on the red carpet of the Los Angeles Emmy FYC event for the show on May 17. “Whenever I see Lizzy [Talbot], the intimacy coordinator, I’m like, ‘Wait, I have a sex scene?’ And she’s like, ‘No, dear. It’s somebody else.’ It’s so funny when I see her, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I forgot I have a sex scene.'”

Of playing Hamm’s ex-wife, Peet says, “It’s fun to play exes who can’t quite let it go.”

“I just feel like [show creator Jonathan] Tropper wrote a really great character,” she says. “I love my stuff with Jon. He’s a gentleman, and he’s a really good leader on the set. He’s not a snob, and I appreciate that.”

Like Hamm’s character, who gets fired from his hedge fund job at the beginning of the series, Peet says she once got fired from a waitressing job.

“I had never waitressed, so I put that I had and then made up a restaurant that was in San Francisco, even though I was from New York, and then gave my boyfriend’s number as the reference,” she says. “Then, on my first day, it was like an Italian restaurant where they had a pizza oven. A lovely couple whose table I was assigned to asked me if I could warm the bread, which was in a bread basket. I put the whole thing in the pizza oven. I didn’t start a fire, but the dude was like, ‘You’re fired, you dumb, actress type.'”

Peet previously told PEOPLE that her Your Friends & Neighbors character appealed to her because Mel is a “middle-aged divorcée” who “isn’t depressed and bitter and sitting around on her couch drinking Chardonnay and hoping to find a way to start online dating.”

“I like that you come into it, and she’s having a lot of sex with a gorgeous former NBA player and getting out there already, and that [Coop is] the one who is sort of more bitter,” she said. “I think [Tropper] just had a really interesting way of illustrating her particular brand of suburban ennui.”
