Dierks Bentley is going “big” when it comes to celebrating 20 years of marriage with his wife Cassidy.

The “Drunk on a Plane” singer, 49, revealed in an interview with PEOPLE ahead of the debut of his new album Broken Branches that he wants to do something to celebrate their longtime love and their growing family.

“It’s an amazing life we’ve built together and we need to do something big,” the country musician says.

“… it’s been a great 20 years, and [Cassidy is] just really an incredible person,” he adds.

Since tying the knot in 2005, Dierks and Cassidy have welcomed three children: daughters Evalyn Day and Jordan Catherine, and son Knox. He shares that the five of them are a “unit” and like to “do stuff together.”

“We really are our family, the five of us. We call ourselves ‘The Croods,’ as in the TV show. Our group text thread is ‘The Croods.’ We’re just like, we all like being together,” he says.

Even though things can get busy with everyone’s hectic schedules, he and his wife really try to spend as much time together as they can — and that won’t be any different when it comes to their 20th wedding anniversary.

“My kids are very busy with travel hockey and theater and all the stuff they do… and whatnot,” Dierks explains. “But we are kind of a core unit and we’ve done a lot together. My wife and I really need our 20th to do some [sort] of adventure, something special together.”2

“We really have spent so much time as a family, and moving into the next 20 [years], I don’t know what it’ll look like. Our kids are growing up, so [there won’t be] a lot more time together down the road,” he continues. “We’ve always kind of planned on that and known that would be there. So, we pumped a lot into our family…”

While the Grammy-nominated musician has spent several years building a life with his wife, the two go back a long way — all the way to elementary school, in fact.

“My wife is — I’ve known her since eighth grade in Arizona. On social media, our story isn’t as well known as some other people [who are] a little more public about all that stuff, but [that’s] always never really been our style,” he shares.

Since meeting in school, the pair spent years in and out of each other’s lives before deciding to elope in Mexico on Dec. 14, 2005. Over the years, Dierks has shared numerous wedding tributes to his wife, including one in 2023, when they celebrated 18 years of marriage.

“Happy Anniversary to us! Love this girl. Couldn’t imagine life without you babe,” Dierks captioned a series of images of his wife on Instagram.
