Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle Talk About Going Through ‘Ups and Downs’ in Their Marriage (Exclusive)

“Something that works for us is to, like, know what makes each other feel that intimacy connection,” Wambach says in a clip from their upcoming interview on “Call Her Daddy”

Abby Wambach is opening up about managing the “ups and downs” in her relationship with wife Glennon Doyle.

Wambach, 44, and Doyle, 49, are guests on the latest episode of Alex Cooper and SiriusXM’s Call Her Daddy, releasing Wednesday, May 7, and in an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, the former USWNT star discusses the meaning of true intimacy.

“Something that works for us is to, like, know what makes each other feel that intimacy connection,” Wambach tells Cooper in the clip. “Because we’ve been together for 10 years-ish, and we’ve gone through ups and downs,” she shares.

Wambach says those “ups and downs” applied to “the actual act of sex” but also come up emotionally. “We’ve gone through ups and downs of feeling really, really connected and so in line and so on the same page,” says Wambach.

“And then, you know, stuff happens, people die, diagnoses happen, and it forces you, kind of, away from this homeostasis line, in a way.”

She went on to say it isn’t her dream to “be living at the high” at all times, because it’s “chemically” not “sustainable” to do so, but ultimately the key is for balance when it comes to intimacy.

“It happens for the first couple of years, you’re infatuated with each other and can’t keep your hands off of each other, but then you fall into a sense of loving, of complete partnership and intimacy,” Wambach concludes in the clip.

Doyle and Wambach took their relationship public on Nov. 13, 2016 and officially tied the knot on May 14, 2017 in front of friends and family.

The couple also spoke about the keys to their relationship during a 2019 interview with WSJ. Magazine. “To be in a relationship with another woman, there’s a ton of talking all the time,” Wambach told the outlet. “We’re so passionate about the work that we’re trying to accomplish. We’re trying to solve for big problems, we want equality, and it calls for a lot of discussion between us.”
