Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s Home Set on Fire While Family Slept — What Happened After Passover Dinner
The 51-year-old Pennsylvania governor shared an update on his family’s safety after a man broke into their residence and set part of the home on fire.
A quiet night at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence turned chaotic when an intruder set part of the home on fire as they slept inside. According to CNN, the arson occurred around 2 a.m., Sunday. Shapiro and his wife, four children, two dogs, and houseguests were safely evacuated.
The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire extinguished the flames, but the building sustained “a significant amount of damage,” Pennsylvania State Police said. Images show scorched walls, ash-covered floors, and remnants of a Passover dinner hosted that evening.

Authorities identified the suspect as 38-year-old Cody Balmer of Harrisburg. State Police said he scaled a fence, forcibly entered the residence, and remained inside for less than a minute before fleeing.
He was arrested the same day. Prosecutors plan to charge him with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. Federal charges are possible. Police also recovered homemade incendiary devices.
In a statement posted to X, Shapiro described being woken by banging at the door and praised first responders for their swift action. “Last night, they did so for our family – and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe,” he said.
He said the Pennsylvania State Police are leading the investigation.
