Goldie Hawn Reveals Diagnosis at the Oscars – Details

During the latest Academy Awards, Andrew Garfield took to the stage to present alongside Goldie Hawn. While interacting on stage, the iconic actress revealed a health condition she is currently battling and asked Andrew for assistance.

On March 2, 2025, the 97th Academy Awards aired live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Among the stars presenting awards were Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn, with the former delivering a touching tribute to the legendary actress.

During the ceremony, which honored films released in 2024, Garfield held Goldie’s hand as he became emotional. He revealed, “There’s a person that gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort, and tonight I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn.”

The heartfelt tribute left Goldie blushing as she playfully tried to hide behind the winner announcement envelope in her hand. She thanked the younger actor, saying, “That really touches me.”

Andrew continued, expressing how he could feel his late mother, Lynn Garfield, smiling at them. Goldie, giggling and blushing, responded, “I know, I’m smiling too.” The younger actor went on to acknowledge how the legendary actress had brought joy to audiences through her films, lifting spirits and making people feel like all was right in the world.

Goldie thanked him again and reflected on her love for acting, emphasizing how fortunate she felt to make movies. She then became a bit whimsical, sharing her joy in making people laugh—though she humorously added that not everyone found her funny.

Revealing a health challenge she is facing, she asked Andrew to read the next line from the teleprompter, stating, “Okay, sweetheart, can you read that? I can’t read it. I’m completely blind. I mean, I am!” She then clarified the nature of her condition, adding, “I have cataracts.”

Andrew valiantly reassured her, “It’s okay, I’ve got you,” as he pulled in close and proceeded to read from the teleprompter. The clip, shared by ABC News on X, cut out before the pair could announce the winner in the Best Animated Short Film category.

According to the Mayo Clinic website, a cataract is the clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. People with cataracts often feel like they are looking through cloudy lenses or a frosty, fogged-up window, making clear vision difficult.

The clinic’s site further explained, “Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read, drive a car at night, or see the expression on a friend’s face.” It also noted that the condition develops gradually and does not significantly impact eyesight in its early stages.

The Mayo Clinic stated that, in the initial stages, cataracts can be managed with eyeglasses or stronger lighting. However, if impaired vision starts interfering with daily activities, cataract surgery is recommended.

The website also highlighted the positive aspect of cataract surgery, revealing that it is “generally a safe, effective procedure.” Unfortunately, this is not the only health issue Goldie has faced in recent years.

In November 2024, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her struggles with mental health on the Making Space with Hoda Kotb podcast. She shared how she navigated these challenges early in her career.

Goldie confessed that after securing her first major television role, starring in “Good Morning World,” she struggled with anxiety and depression. She recalled, “They said they wrote a part in for me, and I called home and I said, ‘Mom, you’re not going to believe this.'”

She continued, “And then I became anxious and I had little panic attacks, and then I realized that every time I’d go into a restaurant or a place, I’d get dizzy, and I would want to go home.”

This sudden shift in her emotions troubled her, especially since she had always been “a happy kid.” Reflecting on her childhood, Goldie revealed, “Nothing bothered me. I was joyful. I didn’t know what happened to my joy.”

The actress continued, “I mean, I lost my — I tried to fake my smile. I’ll never forget that. It’s the scariest thing that has ever happened to me.” Her anxiety became so overwhelming that she feared having panic attacks while filming the role she had landed.

She admitted, “I had to go back to my dressing room to pull myself together because I didn’t know when another panic attack was going to happen.” Determined not to let the issue control her life, she sought therapy as a way to cope with her anxiety.

Speaking to Hoda Kotb, Goldie revealed that she spent nine years in therapy. During that time, she learned valuable lessons about herself, the power of forgiveness, and how to handle others’ perceptions of her as her fame grew.

Looking back, the actress acknowledged that she had felt out of place when she got the role in “Good Morning World.” She explained, “I didn’t want to do that. I was a dancer.”

Describing the start of her acting career, she shared, “I was just getting my feet wet.” The transition into acting made her feel as though she had been “taken out of a world and put into another world.”

Her personal experience led her to recognize the importance of discussing mental health openly. Goldie emphasized, “We can’t live in the dark and wonder what’s going on with me. We have to know that people do experience this.”

She added, “And it’s really important to acknowledge it. Because only until you acknowledge it can you fix it.”

Viewers were quick to react online, with some questioning the unexpected tribute. “What a weird thing to say. What did he mean?” one person wrote. Another person quickly clarified that Garfield’s late mother, Lynn, who passed away in 2019, was a huge fan of Hawn, making the tribute deeply personal. “His mom passed away in 2019; it was a very tragic death. He was thanking her for being one of his mom’s idols,” the user explained.

“There’s a person who gave my mother the most joy and comfort during her life, and tonight, I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn,” Garfield said during his speech.

Garfield has previously spoken about his mother’s passing and the profound impact it had on him. During the filming of “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” his co-star Jessica Chastain and Searchlight Pictures made accommodations so that he could spend time with his mother in her final days. The loss deeply shaped Garfield’s perspective, making this moment on the Oscars stage even more poignant.

While the sentiment was clearly meaningful to him, some were confused about the connection. One viewer reacted with, “And the award for most awkward moment goes to…?” Another commented, “I feel trapped watching this Goldie Hawn and Andrew Garfield debacle.”

However, it wasn’t just Garfield’s words that got people talking—Hawn’s reaction also raised eyebrows.

While the actor was visibly emotional, Goldie Hawn’s response appeared lukewarm, leading one viewer to joke, “Poor Andrew Garfield pouring his heart out to Goldie Hawn and she’s like ‘Ok.’” Another simply noted, “It seemed very awkward on Goldie’s part.”

However, one viewer stood up for this moment, writing, “So funny how jaded people are… it was sweet, gracious, and a rare moment of REAL in Hollywood. She was clearly very touched, as anyone would be to hear that what they did MATTERED that much to his mom. He blessed her heart with that moment of kindness.”

In Hollywood, where awards show speeches are often meticulously planned and polished, unscripted emotional moments like this one stand out—for better or worse. The exchange has since gone viral, with opinions split on whether it was a beautiful tribute or an awkward awards show moment. Either way, it’s safe to say this wasn’t the Oscars’ most expected moment of the night.

Speaking of unexpected moments, another major highlight of the night was the controversial humor of the Oscars’ first-time host.

Conan O’Brien, making his Oscars hosting debut, delivered a joke about Kendrick Lamar and Drake that didn’t sit well with most viewers. Some called the quip a complete misstep, while others defended Conan’s signature brand of edgy humor.

Conan’s attempt at humor at the Oscars became one of the night’s most talked-about moments. Midway through hosting the show, he quipped, “Well, we’re halfway through the show, which means it’s time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile.”

The remark was met with a few scattered laughs and claps before Conan quickly followed up with, “Don’t worry, I’m lawyered up.” Social media quickly erupted with responses to the comedian’s joke, with many viewers criticizing it as inappropriate and unnecessary.

One viewer remarked, “The crazy part was when the audience felt disgusted instead cheering [sic].” Another user simply pointed out, “Nobody’s laughing.” Disappointed, someone else wrote“He literally ruined the night idc [sic].” Another person who was shocked by the comment declared, “That’s crazy!”

Another viewer added“Disrespect on another level. What happened to us 😔.” However, not everyone was critical. One fan found the moment entertaining, calling it the “Funniest moment of the show.” Another fan praised the host, “✨⭐️Conan is always hilarious 😂 ⭐️✨.”
