She was the first female artist to record under Motown Records and is mostly remembered as the ex-wife of the legendary songwriter. The former couple met while they were both in secondary school and started dating. She was by Smokey’s side for 27 years before they divorced in 1986.

Following their separation, Smokey took his time before finding love again, eventually marrying his second wife, Frances Robinson née Gladney, in 2002. Smokey met his second wife years before they became romantically involved, as he shared, “She was from Pittsburgh, but I met her in Los Angeles.

“We’ve known each other for more than 30 years now but, for a long time, we were just two people among a group of friends who hung out and celebrated holidays, birthdays, and so on, together,” he continued.

However, a unique twist of fate bonded the two even further — they share the same birthday, February 19. One year, their mutual friends decided to celebrate their birthdays together, taking them to a restaurant in Los Angeles called “Crustacean.”

That night, Smokey discovered coconut shrimp for the first time and instantly loved it. Frances did too. A week later, as the musician was preparing to travel, he and Frances reminisced about their birthday celebration.
“I said, ‘Hey, let’s go get some coconut shrimp.’ ‘Sure,’ she said. That was the beginning for us, and I tell her all the time, ‘You do realize that I married you because of coconut shrimp,'” he recalled.

Despite their natural chemistry, Frances initially wanted to keep their relationship a secret. “When we first started seeing each other, she wanted to keep it on the down-low. She didn’t want anybody to know because we were friends. And then all our friends were going to be talking about us,” Smokey revealed.

This sentiment even inspired one of his songs, “I Keep Calling,” which features lyrics such as “Simple things like touching in public/Private touches goin’ unseen.” The track, written years earlier, finally found a home on Smokey’s 2023 album, “Gasms.”

Over the years, the couple has openly celebrated their love. On February 19, 2023, Smokey took to Facebook to honor their shared birthday, writing, “My beautiful wife Frances and I share the same birthday, and today is that day #happybirthday to us my love.”
Similarly, in 2021, Frances expressed her admiration for Smokey on Instagram, sharing, “Happy Birthday to my Wonderful Husband. I thank God every single day for putting you in my life. You are a true blessing not only to me but to everyone you meet.”
“You are my best friend, confidant, and you have truly shown me the true meaning of love. A man who loves as Christ loves the Church. You have really shown me that kind of love. Thank you my love, have a blessed day. ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍,” her post continued.
Frances, an interior designer by trade, has played a key role in designing their homes in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Pittsburgh. “Given that Frances is from Pittsburgh, I thought we might as well get a house here,” Smokey shared.
In their home in the City of Angels that has since been put on the market, she made what she called the “men’s room,” a wood-paneled space where the singer kept some of his awards with a pool table and big screen TV to hang out with his friends.
“By trade, she is an interior designer — one of the best I’ve ever seen —and she’s done a great job with our homes in L.A., Las Vegas, and Pittsburgh. I love it here. It’s one of the only cities I know that’s still progressing,” he added.
In addition to their personal life, the couple has ventured into business together. The singer’s passion for self-care led him to launch a skincare line in collaboration with Frances, which she admitted:
“We did this for ourselves in the beginning because my husband and I were using many products — and nothing worked.”

Their product lines, reportedly named after two of Smokey’s biggest hits, were created by a leading cosmetic brand, Skinphonic, which helps produce products for people underrepresented in the beauty industry.
For more than two years, a team of experts from Skinphonic worked closely with the singer and his wife to develop products that were well suited to their skin.
When the couple used the skincare, they realized that they wanted to make it available to the public and began working towards having a skincare line.
The line includes two products — My Girl for women and Get Ready for men — which was specifically formulated for people of color, intended to help skin look brighter and more natural for people with pigmentation in their skin.
The songwriter reportedly said that it was important for men to have a simple product that helps take good care of their bodies in the best and most effortless way.
At 85, Smokey still maintains an active and demanding schedule, touring the country in recent years and continuing his musical legacy. He credits his health and energy to habits instilled in him from a young age.

“I’m only going to get this one body, so I want to be healthy as long as possible. I believe in taking care of myself,” he said.
Part of his wellness routine includes getting plenty of rest while on tour, ensuring he can keep up with his performances. However, balancing his career and family has always come naturally to him.

“By remembering the ‘why,'” Smokey explained in 2021. “Before I was blessed enough to get into the music business, it was my impossible dream. My favorite prayer. And I guess God said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna let you have this, see what you do with it, see how you treat people.'”

Having a supportive partner has made all the difference. “I’ve got a great wife and a wonderful family. And I love my job. I love my wife and my family. And I love the fact that they support me in loving my job. When you’ve got it like that, there’s no juggling,” he said.
He further summed up his philosophy with a simple mantra, “Love leads the way. All you’ve gotta do is follow.”
In recent years, fans have often marveled at Frances’ timeless beauty and how good the couple look together. “FABULOUS COUPLE,” one social media user shared. “So beautiful together 🔥 ,” another typed. A third commented, “She looks like Lena Horne!”
“What’s that saying ‘When you with someone for so long you start looking like each other’ HAPPY and LOVING they are,” another person shared. A fifth added, “They almost resemble each other.”
Smokey Robinson and Frances’ love story is one of deep friendship, shared dreams, and mutual respect. Their journey from friends to lifelong partners proves that love can come when least expected — even over a plate of coconut shrimp.
