HOW IS RHINOPHYMA-RED BULBOUS NOSE TREATED?
Rhinophyma and its precursor condition Rosacea is best treated by practicing prevention. Retinoid (Vitamin A) creams, as well as topical antibiotics like Metrogel® (Clindamycin), are the most commonly prescribed topical skin medications. Occasionally, oral antibiotics are prescribed during acute breakouts. Additional preventive measures include wearing sunscreen, topical Vitamin C, and avoiding exacerbating foods, alcohol, extreme weather conditions, and stress. The “old wives” tale that excess alcohol consumption caused Rhinophyma comes from the flushing of the overactive blood vessels of the face and nose characteristic of alcohol use. Treatment of the redness and ruddy appearance of the skin is typically treated by a series of non-ablative Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or BroadBand Light (BBL) treatments or several different wavelengths of lasers that target the red blood cell components in the skin. Broken capillaries of the nose can also be treated with these same light devices.
Correction of the bulbous appearance of the nose or “smoothing” involves a number of different resurfacing procedures. Dermabrasion, electro-surgery and laser resurfacing are the most commonly used procedures to smooth the texture of the nose. These techniques can be used to dramatically smooth the nose and return it to its pre-Rhinophyma texture and shape. Imagine going back to what your nose used to look like! These procedures are typically done under twilight anesthesia or general anesthesia as an outpatient. Recovery occurs in stages. The nose heals in about a week, is red for several more weeks, and then returns to its normal state in a much-improved form. Your results are visible immediately but final results take at least 6-12 months to show as your collagen remodels and swelling of the tissues resolves.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE RHINOPHYMA-RED BULBOUS NOSE SURGERY?
Typically, a consultation is scheduled to discuss the options available to correct Rhinophyma or Red Bulbous Nose. At this visit, we review the options and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Your medical history is reviewed, and you will be asked to see your medical doctor for a physical check-up and a few labs to make sure you can undergo the surgery safely. If you are a smoker, you are advised to quit smoking two weeks before and after surgery. This sensible precaution ensures your safety and uneventful healing. You are seen regularly after your surgery until you are completely healed and satisfied with the results of your Rhinophyma-Red Bulbous Nose procedure. Post-procedure skin care products will be recommended and instructions reviewed and documented on a convenient reference sheet.
WHAT IS THE RHINOPHYMA-RED BULBOUS NOSE TREATMENT LIKE?
For the vast majority of patients, Rhinophyma-Red Bulbous Nose treatment is an extremely gratifying procedure. Natural-looking results, long-term skin enhancement and no scarring are some of the immediate benefits of this treatment. The procedure only takes about one hour to complete as an outpatient in the convenience of our accredited surgery center.
The procedure is simple and straightforward. You are given antibiotics, and you are sedated. The nose is locally anesthetized in the operating room. The nose and surrounding skin are injected with a local anesthetic to decrease bleeding and for postoperative comfort. The best suited technology is then used to smooth the skin and to shape the nose into its final ideal form. The initial result appears as though that area has been ‘sandpapered”. A sticky dressing placed on the surface of the nose for about a week until new skin regrows. The skin is initially pink, then gradually starts looking natural and vibrant.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO AFTER SURGERY FOR RHINOPHYMA-RED BULBOUS NOSE?
Our office will provide you with a detailed post-operative instruction sheet and shopping list that will be individualized to your needs. We will see you in the office soon after the procedure to ensure that you are recovering normally. The number of follow-up visits required depends on the pace of your healing. Patients are cautioned to avoid sun exposure for the first few weeks after this procedure. Maintenance of the result involves the use of topical skin care such as retinoids, antibiotic gels, and BBL treatments to manage the re-growth of capillaries. Most patients recuperate quite quickly and it isn’t long before they are enjoying their new nose!
