Young Off-Duty Deputy Dies in 3-Car Crash in California: ‘He Fought Valiantly’

A three-car crash in Saugus, Calif., killed a 21-year-old Los Angeles County Sheriff deputy on Monday, May 19, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Deputy Daniel Valencia Chavira served for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department just over a year before his death. He was off duty at the time of the 3:17 p.m. accident. It occurred on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Saugus, which is 35 miles northeast of central Los Angeles.

At 3:20 p.m. local time, firefighters were dispatched and arrived at 3:32 p.m., L.A. County Fire Department spokesperson Saadullah said, per The Signal. Upon arrival, there were multiple injured parties and three vehicles with significant damage. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Chavira and the other parties were transported to Henry Mayo Hospital. There, Chavira succumbed to his injuries.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own, who was taken from us far too soon,” Sheriff Robert G. Luna said in the statement.

“Our Deputy dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, both in and out of uniform. His commitment to public safety was not just a job—it was who he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.”

“It’s tragic anyway you put it,” Luna said on Monday, May 19, per KTLA. “Incredible young man, we are so fortunate to have hired him, and he was providing excellent service here in the community on and off duty.”

Chavira joined the department in May 2024 and was assigned to the North County Correctional Facility.

“The other injured parties were transported by ambulance to Henry Mayo Hospital for medical treatment,” according to the statement. The patients included two minors and two adults, and their current conditions have not been provided, The Signal reported.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this deputy, our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during this incredibly difficult time,” said California Highway Patrol Captain E. A. Krusey. “We honor his service and commitment to our community.”

CA Rep. George Whitesides issued a statement on Tuesday, May 20, via X.

“My thoughts go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Valencia Chavira. His unwavering commitment to protecting and serving Castaic and the surrounding community — both in and out of uniform — was a testament to his character, courage, and the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him.
